The National Park Service (NPS) requested a decision on the manner in which it should charge a week of annual leave to the account of a U.S. Park Police officer injured in the performance of his duty. NPS assigned the officer to light duty for 4 hours a day, but he continued to accrue leave based on a full 8-hour workday. GAO held that NPS should charge the officer leave for the entire period he was scheduled to work and for the portion of the workday for which he received compensation. Accordingly, NPS should charge 40 hours to the officer's leave account.
