YOUR LETTER OF MAY 12, 1965, REQUESTS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING YOUR INDEBTEDNESS TO THE UNITED STATES AND THE WITHHOLDING OF YOUR MONTHLY RETIREMENT ANNUITY IN LIQUIDATION OF SUCH INDEBTEDNESS.

ON THE DATE OF YOUR RETIREMENT, THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF YOUR INDEBTEDNESS TO THE UNITED STATES WAS $12,016.26, PLUS INTEREST COMPUTED AT 6 PERCENT PER ANNUM ON $66 FROM JANUARY 25, 1938, UNTIL PAID. THE $66 REPRESENTS THE AMOUNT OF A CHECK DATED OCTOBER 15, 1932, WHICH WAS NOT RECOVERED BY THE UNITED STATES THROUGH LITIGATION OR VOLUNTARY PAYMENTS AND THUS WAS CHARGEABLE TO YOU.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT AS OF APRIL 30, 1965, THE SUM OF $1,463.67 HAS BEEN WITHHELD FROM YOUR ANNUITY PAYMENTS FOR APPLICATION TO YOUR INDEBTEDNESS. THAT SUM INCLUDES ONE-HALF OF THE ANNUITY PAYMENT DUE YOU FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL.

IT IS NOT THE PRACTICE OF THIS OFFICE TO PERIODICALLY ADVISE DEBTORS AS TO THE STATUS OF THEIR INDEBTEDNESS. HOWEVER, YOU MAY REQUEST SUCH INFORMATION BY ADDRESSING A LETTER TO THE CLAIMS DIVISION, UNITED STATES GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE, 441 G STREET, N.W., WASHINGTON, D.C. 20548.
