Highlights

The Forest Service requested a decision regarding an employee's claim for reimbursement for relocation expenses. The Service: (1) noted that it erroneously authorized full relocation allowances for the claimant, since her status as a newly hired federal employee limited such reimbursement to family travel and household goods shipments; and (2) requested that GAO submit the claim to Congress under the Meritorious Claims Act. GAO held that: (1) the Service erroneously authorized the full relocation allowance; and (2) it would not submit the claim to Congress, since it was not the act's purpose to provide payment for expenses incurred pursuant to erroneous authorization. Accordingly, the claim was denied.
