From the U.S. Government Accountability Office, www.gao.gov Transcript for: Ridesharing Vehicles and Open Safety Recalls Description: As with all passenger vehicles, ridesharing vehicles can have unrepaired, or open, safety recalls, which could expose customers in these vehicles unknowingly to safety risks. GAO estimated that nationally, nearly 1 in 6, or about 16 percent, of ridesharing vehicles that performed a passenger trip in August 2022 had an open safety recall as of December 2022. The Department of Transportation is working with ridesharing companies to raise awareness of open safety recalls among ridesharing vehicles. Related GAO Works: GAO-23-105996. Vehicle Safety: Extent of Open Recalls among Ridesharing Vehicles Released: May 2023 [ GAO's Elizabeth Repko, Director, Physical Infrastructure, speaking ] [ Elizabeth Repko: ] Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft use mobile apps to connect passengers to drivers. Most drivers use their personal vehicles for these services. Like all passenger cars, ridesharing vehicles could be subject to safety recalls when automakers notify car owners that certain repairs are needed for safety. The federal government and most states and localities do not require drivers to fix recalled vehicles, and most ridesharing passengers do not know whether their driver has had those repairs. We found that about 16% of rideshare vehicles nationwide had open safety recalls in August 2022. The Department of Transportation has worked with ridesharing companies to raise awareness of open safety recalls amongst ridesharing vehicles. For more information, check out our report at GAO.gov.
