From the U.S. Government Accountability Office, www.gao.gov Transcript for: Federal Workforce: OPM Advances Efforts to Close Government-Wide Skills Gaps but Needs a Plan to Improve Its Own Capacity Description: The federal government needs a highly skilled and specialized workforce to carry out many of its missions, including cybersecurity or acquisition. Federal agencies look to the Office of Personnel Management for guidance on closing gaps in the skills and experience of its workforce. But OPM has skills gaps of its own that could prevent it from helping other agencies. Related GAO Works: GAO-23-105528. Released: February 2023 Federal agencies serve the American people in many ways-including disaster response, food and drug safety, and financial assistance. Agencies need more people with the right skills to provide those services. So they look to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for guidance on closing the skills gaps in their workforces. But a 2022 assessment showed that OPM had its own skills gaps. We found that OPM has taken steps to address them, but doesn't have an action plan yet. Our recommendations are to help OPM close its own skills gaps so it can continue helping agencies government-wide. [ End ] For more info, check out our report GAO-23-105528 at: GAO.gov
