From the U.S. Government Accountability Office, www.gao.gov Transcript for: Tactical Aircraft Investments Description: Most of DOD's existing tactical aircraft first entered service in the 1970s and 1980s and have exceeded their original service lives. DOD is making significant development and procurement investments but has not yet conducted integrated acquisition portfolio-level analyses of its tactical aircraft platforms. GAO is recommending DOD conduct such an analysis of its tactical aircraft investments, and report on its findings to Congress. Related GAO Works: GAO-23-106375. Tactical Aircraft Investments: DOD Needs Additional Portfolio Analysis to Inform Future Budget Decisions Released: December 2022 The Department of Defense is upgrading its fleet of tactical aircraft. Most of these fighter and attack planes purchased in the 1970s and 80s have outlived their planned service lives. Over the next five years, DOD is proposing to spend nearly $100 billion on major investments and changes to its tactical aircraft. This includes modernizing aircraft, buying and developing new aircraft, and retiring a significant number of aircraft. We recommend that DOD analyze its portfolio of tactical aircraft investments, and report on its findings to Congress. [ End ] For more info, check out our report GAO-23-106375 at: GAO.gov
