Video Title: GAO: Large Constellations of Satellites Technology Assessment Narration For decades, satellites have been used for GPS, communications, and remote sensing. More recently, "constellations" of a hundred satellites or more have been used to provide internet access-which helped drive a dramatic spike in the number of satellites in orbit. Text on screen - about 5,000 in orbit as of 2021 - 60,000 expected by 2030 Narration We talked to experts and federal agencies and they said satellite constellations could have some disruptive effects. For example: Chemicals from the rockets that propel satellites into space could deplete ozone and lead to unexpected changes in the climate. Light reflections and radio transmissions could make it harder for astronomers to spot asteroids and study the universe. And, each new satellite raises the risk that a collision or failure will create more space debris, which could endanger other satellites, crewed missions, and people on the ground as it falls back to earth.
