From the U.S. Government Accountability Office, www.gao.gov Transcript for: Military Depots: Addressing Deteriorating Facilities and Equipment - Director Summary Description: Diana Maurer discusses our May 2022 report on the condition of military depots' infrastructure. Depots employ over 80,000 civilians and maintain, overhaul, and repair DOD's weapon systems and equipment. Their facilities remain in fair to poor condition with most capital equipment past its service life. GAO recommends that the military services report in their annual budget requests the minimum investment level needed to prevent further deterioration. Related GAO Works: GAO-22-105009. Military Depots: DOD Strategy for Addressing Deteriorating Facilities and Equipment is Incomplete Released: May 2022 [ GAO's Diana Maurer, Director, Defense Capabilities and Management, speaking to the camera ] [ Diana Maurer : ] The military repairs and overhauls its tanks, planes and other major weapons systems at large industrial locations known as depots - which employ more than 80,000 people. Unfortunately, depot infrastructure is generally in fair to poor condition, which increases costs and impedes military readiness. Most depot equipment is past its service life, and the backlog of facility improvement projects increased by more than $3 billion since 2017. The Army, Navy and Air Force have met the legal spending requirements and put more than $20 billion into depots since 2007. However, they don't report on what's needed to prevent further deterioration. Our recommendations help address this issue. To learn more visit GAO.gov.
