Tom Melito is the Managing Director of the International Affairs and Trade (IAT) team. He is responsible for GAO’s work that oversees most international engagements, including those that cover humanitarian and development assistance, international trade, security assistance, and foreign affairs management.

Tom joined GAO in September 1988. Prior to becoming managing director in 2018, Tom was a Director in GAO’s IAT team, focusing on a wide range of humanitarian issues, including Syrian refugee assistance, human trafficking, and food assistance. In addition, he was also responsible for IAT’s work examining UN Peacekeeping, economic sanctions, export controls and foreign military sales.

Tom earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.
