Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP)

Short Description Provides competitive grants to national and regional nonprofits and consortiums that have experience providing or facilitating self-help housing opportunities. The grantee or its affiliates must use the grants for eligible expenses in connection with developing nonluxury housing for low-income families and persons who otherwise would be unable to purchase a house. National and regional nonprofits and consortiums are eligible for grants for land acquisition and infrastructure improvements. Homebuyers must contribute a significant amount of sweat equity toward the construction of their homes. SHOP also requires community participation through volunteers who assist the homebuyers on the construction of the homes. Assisted units must be decent, safe, and sanitary nonluxury dwellings that comply with local building and safety codes and standards. These units must be sold to eligible low-income homebuyers at prices below the prevailing market price.
