Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO discussed the operations of the White House Travel Office, focusing on the: (1) circumstances surrounding the removal of Travel Office employees; (2) past financial management practices of the Travel Office; and (3) current financial management operations of the Travel Office. GAO noted that: (1) although it conducted its review under limited constraints, additional documents have been provided regarding the events surrounding the dismissal of Travel Office employees; (2) the Travel Office met 26 of the 29 criteria for sound financial management for the period January through August 1995; and (3) the Travel Office needs to improve its bank accounts reconciliations, billing procedures, and vendor payments.
