Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on end of fiscal year (FY) staffing at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), focusing on the: (1) occupations that have the highest number of vacant positions; and (2) number of vacant positions in law enforcement and social services. GAO noted that BIA: (1) had about 14,600 employees on board at the end of FY 1993 and 13,700 at the end of FY 1994; (2) had over 4,300 vacant positions as of June 1995; (3) occupations with the most vacant positions included laborer, secretary, teacher, forestry aid, and equipment operator; and (4) had 193 vacant positions in law enforcement and 76 vacant positions in social services.
