- Full Report:
GAO provided its quarterly status report on the Department of Energy's (DOE) implementation of its nuclear waste management program for the quarter ended December 31, 1987.
GAO found that, during the quarter: (1) an amendment to the Nuclear Waste Policy Act terminated the site-specific activities, except reclamation, at the Deaf Smith and Hanford sites; (2) DOE closed out the existing financial assistance grants to the affected states and Indian tribes, but had not decided whether it should close out the Oregon grant due to its relationship to nuclear activities at the Hanford site; (3) DOE issued its draft of the site characterization plan and its environmental and socioeconomic monitoring plans for the Yucca Mountain site; (4) DOE planned to hold technical workshops with Nevada state and local officials to discuss the draft; (5) the Nuclear Waste Fund received about $181 million in fees and investment income, of which DOE obligated about $63 million for program activities; and (6) the Fund balance as of December 31, 1987, was about $1.6 billion.
