Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO obtained information on Department of the Interior, U.S. Forest Service, and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation expenditures for international travel and technical assistance to foreign countries for fiscal years 1984 and 1985.

GAO found that: (1) the agencies spent about $67 million on international activities such as dam and irrigation system construction, mineral surveys, and national park development; (2) foreign governments and other federal agencies reimbursed 80 percent of the total expenditures, and the remainder was funded from the agencies' budgets; (3) travel expenses for Interior employees totalled about $7 million; and (4) Interior's total expenditures for international activities in Africa were about $5 million.
