In response to a congressional request, GAO provided information on: (1) Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other federal, state, and local funding for East St. Louis, Illinois, for fiscal years (FY) 1974 through 1985; and (2) historical demographic data on social and economic conditions in the city.

GAO found that: (1) during FY 1977 through 1979, total federal funding for the city was about $100 million annually; (2) HUD provided over $131 million to aid the people and the city of East St. Louis during FY 1974 through 1985; and (3) the city's demographic data showed that social and economic conditions have been declining steadily.
