Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO reviewed the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) new rule on the enhanced 911 emergency calling system. GAO found that: (1) the rule would require covered carriers to transmit all 911 calls originating from mobile handsets to public safety personnel; and (2) FCC followed applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
