GAO reviewed the actions the United Nations (U.N.) has taken since GAO completed the fieldwork for its July 1998 report on the worldwide human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic.

GAO noted that: (1) according to the U.N. Joint Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Secretariat officials, the U.N. has taken action on many of the issues raised in GAO's July 1998 report; and (2) specifically, Secretariat officials stated that: (a) HIV/AIDS spending data are being verified; (b) private-sector mobilization efforts by the Secretariat are continuing; (c) an evaluation framework has been developed; (d) several positive steps have been taken by theme groups in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, India, and the Philippines; and (e) technical support and information for theme groups has been improved.
