1993 Defense Budget: Potential Reductions to Ammunition Programs

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the military services' amended fiscal year (FY) 1993 budget requests for ammunition, the Army's request for ammunition production base support, and selected segments of appropriations for prior years for some items.

The Senate and House Committees on Appropriations should reduce the Army's FY 1993 budget request by $179.6 million for seven ammunition items and by $11.7 million for production base support.

The Senate and House Committees on Appropriations reduced the Army's FY93 ammunition budget request by $90 million and its FY93 production base support requests by $11.7 million. They did not make the other recommended reductions. GAO will follow-up on this recommendation during an on-going FY94 ammunition budget review and make a new recommendation if the ammunition program can still be reduced.
