- Full Report:
Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the number of Department of Defense (DOD) military and civilian personnel associated with the weapons systems affected by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which required the destruction of those systems and their associated launchers, training equipment, and facilities within 3 years.
GAO found that: (1) in June 1988, when the treaty became effective, DOD had 8,585 military and 1,099 civilian positions authorized in association with the Air Force's Ground Launched Cruise Missile (GLCM) units and 6,974 military and 43 civilian positions authorized for the Army's Pershing units; (2) DOD planned to deactivate all GLCM and Pershing units in accordance with treaty requirements; and (3) DOD planned to eliminate all GLCM military and civilian positions and reduce authorized Pershing staffing to 885 positions by the end of fiscal year 1991 through personnel reassignment, retirement, or separation.
