Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed Department of Defense (DOD) compatible computer procurements.

GAO found that: (1) DOD information showed that during the 3.5-year period ending in March 1989, defense agencies had a total of 155 procurements for mainframes and mainframe peripherals, and 85 percent of those required some type of compatibility; (2) defense agencies obligated $82.1 million for the 155 mainframe and mainframe peripheral procurements; and (3) overall, defense agencies obligated more dollars and compatible procurements to one computer manufacturer than for any other competitor's equipment.
