U.S. Representative Delbert Latta requested information about what GAO can do to bring about proper handling of welfare program funds. The basic purposes of GAO within the Federal Government, as well as outside the Federal Government, are outlined. GAO has made reviews and issues reports containing recommendations to increase the effectiveness, efficiency, and economy of Federal welfare programs. A listing of selected GAO reports on welfare programs issued to Congress and its committees during fiscal year 1969 to the present are enclosed with the letter report.
