Highlights

Pursuant to a legislative requirement, GAO presented its initial observations on selected agencies' implementation of the Government Performance and Results Act. GAO noted that: (1) among the 13 pilot projects selected for review, there are some individual practices that can enhance the general usefulness of future performance reports to decisionmakers and the public; (2) these practices include discussing the relationship between annual performance and strategic goals and mission, reporting cost information and baseline and trend data, clarifying the uses of performance information, including other relevant information, and presenting performance information in a user-friendly manner; and (3) no single pilot report incorporated all of the practices, but reports are expected to improve as agencies gain more experience in producing them.
