Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Justice Department's review on the number of political appointees in the civil service with felony convictions. GAO noted that the Justice Department: (1) identified 146 potential government service appointee/felony employee matches; (2) eliminated 29 persons after further review; (3) mistakenly included 1 person; (4) found 3 persons who were charged, but not guilty; (5) found that 9 persons had the charges dropped or dismissed; (6) found that 102 persons had some type of criminal record, but did not commit offenses within the review time period; and (7) found that 1 person was charged, but not prosecuted.
