In response to a congressional request, GAO reported on the annual costs and sources of funds for protective services provided to certain government officials.
GAO found that the responses of 15 departments, agencies, or bureaus to GAO questionnaires showed that: (1) organizational units within the agencies provide protective services; (2) five agencies indicated that the Office of the Inspector General provides the services; (3) four agencies provide the services through their security offices; (4) heads of agencies make the decisions to initiate or terminate protective services; and (5) protective services decisions were based on an analysis of threats made to federal officials. GAO also found that the total costs reported for protective services were $1,603,639 in fiscal year (FY) 1984, $1,563,703 in FY 1985, and are estimated to be $1,557,939 for FY 1986. The funds for protective services were included in other budgeted costs such as those for salaries, travel, and investigations.
