Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration: Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances
GAO-10-612R, Apr 20, 2010
GAO reviewed the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) new rule on electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. GAO found that (1) the interim final rule revises DEA's regulations to provide practitioners with the option of writing prescriptions for controlled substances electronically. The interim final rule will also permit pharmacies to receive, dispense, and archive these electronic prescriptions; and that, (2) with the exception of the effective date, DEA complied with the applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
