Highlights

GAO reviewed the Food Safety and Inspection Service's new rule on meat produced by advanced meat and bone separation machinery and meat recovery (AMR) systems. GAO found that (1) the rule covers meat produced by AMR systems, and the rule is designed, in part, to prevent human exposure to the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy agent by ensuring that AMR systems are not a means of introducing central nervous system tissue into products labeled as "meat;" and (2) the Food Safety and Inspection Service complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
