GAO reviewed the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) rule on the standard unique health identifier for health care providers. GAO found that (1) the rule establishes the standard for a unique health identifier for health care providers for use in the health care system and announces the adoption of the National Provider Identifier as that standard, (2) the rule also establishes the implementation specifications for obtaining and using the standard unique health identifier for health care providers, and (3) HHS complied with the applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
