Highlights

A decision was requested regarding the entitlement of two Air Force members to reimbursement for daily commuting costs. The members resided at an Air Force base 15 miles from their duty station. After the Air Force discontinued bus service between the base and their duty station, the members were forced to commute by private automobile. When the Air Force denied their request to live off base to alleviate their commuting costs, the members claimed reimbursement for the cost of commuting. GAO held that: (1) there was no basis upon which to reimburse the members for the cost of daily commuting; and (2) the Air Force was not obligated to provide transportation for the members between the base and their duty station. Accordingly, the claims were denied.
