Highlights

GAO expressed its support for the enactment of H.R. 1890, which would extend the existing equitable waiver authority of the Comptroller General to allow for the waiver of collection of erroneous payments of travel, transportation, or relocation expenses to federal employees. Existing legislation provides the authority to waive collection of debts owed the United States arising out of erroneous payments of pay or allowances, when collection would be against equity and good conscience and not in the best interests of the United States. However, administrative waiver may not be granted for erroneous payments of travel, transportation, or relocation expenses.
