[Request for Relief From Liability]

GAO responded to three letters from the Department of the Treasury which requested relief for various Customs officials for losses resulting from uncollectible checks. In connection with these requests, GAO reviewed its longstanding treatment of uncollectable check cases in general and concluded that a new policy regarding checks should be implemented by the Customs Service.
