THERE IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT THEY WILL BE EXTENDED. THESE FARES ARE VALID ONLY ON FLIGHTS SCHEDULED TO DEPART NOT EARLIER THAN NOON MONDAY AND NOT LATER THAN NOON FRIDAY. THEY ARE NOT APPLICABLE DURING HOLIDAY PERIODS. WHERE IT CAN BE PLANNED IN ADVANCE THE SAVINGS ARE SUBSTANTIAL. THE ROUND-TRIP EXCURSION FARES APPLY UNDER THE TERMS OF THE CARRIER'S TARIFF ONLY WHEN TICKETS ARE PURCHASED AT SUCH FARES PRIOR TO DEPARTURE FROM POINT OF ORIGIN. IN CASES WHERE IT IS DETERMINED THAT TRAVEL WILL BE PERFORMED WITHIN THE EXCURSION FARE PERIOD. IN SITUATIONS WHERE IT IS DEFINITELY KNOWN THAT TRAVEL WILL NOT BE PERFORMED WITHIN THE EXCURSION FARE PERIOD. THERE IS DOUBT AS TO THE DATE OF RETURN.

B-157583, MAY 25, 1966

TO THE HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS, INDEPENDENT ESTABLISHMENTS AND OTHERS CONCERNED:

SUBJECT: REDUCED AIR FARES

EFFECTIVE MARCH 27, 1966, ALL OF THE 11 DOMESTIC TRUNK AIRLINES AND ONE LOCAL SERVICE CARRIER (MOHAWK AIRLINES) REDUCED FARES BY 25 PERCENT FOR ROUND-TRIP TRAVEL VIA THEIR RESPECTIVE LINES, SUBJECT TO CERTAIN CONDITIONS CONTAINED IN TARIFFS FILED WITH THE CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD. IN MOST INSTANCES THE REDUCED FARES APPLY TO TRAVEL IN ANY CLASS OF SERVICE EXCEPT JET FIRST-CLASS. THESE FARES REMAIN EFFECTIVE UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 1966, UNLESS SOONER CHANGED, CANCELLED OR EXTENDED. THERE IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT THEY WILL BE EXTENDED.

GENERALLY, THESE FARES ARE VALID ONLY ON FLIGHTS SCHEDULED TO DEPART NOT EARLIER THAN NOON MONDAY AND NOT LATER THAN NOON FRIDAY, AND NOT EARLIER THAN NOON SATURDAY AND NOT LATER THAN NOON SUNDAY. IN ADDITION TO NOT BEING APPLICABLE DURING PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS OF EACH WEEK, THEY ARE NOT APPLICABLE DURING HOLIDAY PERIODS, MOST OF THE MONTH OF JUNE, AND THE ENTIRE MONTH OF AUGUST. UNDER THE REDUCED FARE ARRANGEMENTS, RETURN TRAVEL MAY NOT START EARLIER THAN 12:01 A.M. ON THE SUNDAY FOLLOWING THE PASSENGER'S DEPARTURE FROM POINT OF ORIGIN, AND ALL TRAVEL MUST BE COMPLETED NOT LATER THAN MIDNIGHT OF THE 30TH DAY FOLLOWING THE DATE ON WHICH TRANSPORTATION COMMENCES.

WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS OF THE APPLICABLE PERIODS, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES TO ARRANGE SOME AND, PERHAPS, A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF OFFICIAL ROUND-TRIP TRAVEL AT THE REDUCED FARES. WHERE IT CAN BE PLANNED IN ADVANCE THE SAVINGS ARE SUBSTANTIAL; FOR EXAMPLE, APPROXIMATELY $68 ON ROUND-TRIP BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND WEST COAST POINTS, AND APPROXIMATELY $18 ON ROUND-TRIP TRAVEL BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND CHICAGO.

THE ROUND-TRIP EXCURSION FARES APPLY UNDER THE TERMS OF THE CARRIER'S TARIFF ONLY WHEN TICKETS ARE PURCHASED AT SUCH FARES PRIOR TO DEPARTURE FROM POINT OF ORIGIN. CONSEQUENTLY, IN CASES WHERE IT IS DETERMINED THAT TRAVEL WILL BE PERFORMED WITHIN THE EXCURSION FARE PERIOD, TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS (STANDARD FORM 1169) ISSUED TO COVER SUCH TRAVEL SHOULD SPECIFY "EXCURSION FARE.' IN SITUATIONS WHERE IT IS DEFINITELY KNOWN THAT TRAVEL WILL NOT BE PERFORMED WITHIN THE EXCURSION FARE PERIOD, THE TRANSPORTATION REQUEST SHOULD SPECIFY "REGULAR FARE.' SUCH ANNOTATIONS WOULD GREATLY ASSIST OUR TRANSPORTATION DIVISION IN THE AUDIT OF SUCH ITEMS AND ELIMINATE THE NECESSITY OF CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE ISSUING OFFICE.

IN CASES WHERE THE GOING PORTION OF A ROUND-TRIP COMMENCES WITHIN THE EXCURSION FARE PERIOD, BUT THERE IS DOUBT AS TO THE DATE OF RETURN, WE RECOMMEND THAT AN EXCURSION FARE TICKET BE REQUESTED. IN THE EVENT THE RETURN TRIP COMMENCES DURING THE NON-EXCURSION PERIOD AND THE DIFFERENCE IN COST BETWEEN AN EXCURSION FARE AND THE REGULAR FARE MUST BE PAID, THE TRAVELER MAY ISSUE A SUPPLEMENTAL TRANSPORTATION REQUEST TO UPGRADE THE TICKET, OR HE MAY PAY THE DIFFERENCE IN CASH IF A MODERATE AMOUNT AND OBTAIN REIMBURSEMENT ON HIS TRAVEL VOUCHER.

OF INTEREST TO SOME AGENCIES IS ANOTHER TYPE OF REDUCED FARE TRANSPORTATION OFFERED BY MOST DOMESTIC AIRLINES IN THE WAY OF YOUTH FARES. THESE FARES PROVIDE FOR SAVINGS OF UP TO 50 PERCENT ON TRANSPORTATION OF PERSONS 12 THROUGH 21 YEARS OF AGE. THE PURCHASE OF AN IDENTIFICATION CARD, AT A NOMINAL FEE, IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO PROCURE YOUTH FARE TICKETS. THE COST OF IDENTIFICATION CARDS MAY BE CHARGED AGAINST TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS ISSUED TO COVER SUCH TRAVEL.

AT THE PRESENT TIME YOUTH FARES ARE OFFERED ONLY ON A STANDBY BASIS, EXCEPT FOR ONE LOCAL SERVICE CARRIER WHICH WILL MAKE RESERVATIONS.
