B-126691, MAR. 13, 1956

TO MR. FRANCIS LEO ARK:

IN YOUR LETTER OF MARCH 2, 1956, CONCERNING THE DEBT CHARGE OF $120 AGAINST YOU ON ACCOUNT OF OVERPAYMENT OF A CLASS E ALLOTMENT TO YOUR MOTHER WHILE YOU WERE IN THE ARMY, YOU STATE THAT YOU HAVE DECIDED TO SETTLE THE DEBT BY A LUMP-SUM PAYMENT, INSTEAD OF ON A MONTHLY BASIS AS PREVIOUSLY INDICATED, BUT BEFORE MAKING SUCH PAYMENT YOU WISH TO KNOW WHETHER THAT AMOUNT CONSTITUTES THE FULL INDEBTEDNESS.

THERE IS ENCLOSED FOR YOUR INFORMATION A COPY OF OUR LETTER OF FEBRUARY 27, 1956, TO THE HONORABLE THOMAS E. MARTIN, UNITED STATES SENATE, ADVISING HIM THAT THE EXCEPTION TAKEN BY OUR DIVISION OF AUDITS TO THE PAYMENT TO YOU OF $31.50 FOR TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR YOUR DEPENDENTS HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THAT YOUR PLAN TO LIQUIDATE THE DEBT OF $120 BY A MONTHLY PAYMENT OF $10 WOULD BE SATISFACTORY. THE SUM OF $120 IS THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE DEBT RESULTING FROM OVERPAYMENT OF THE CLASS E ALLOTMENT TO YOUR MOTHER AND YOUR REMITTANCE SHOULD BE MADE AS INDICATED IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH OF OUR LETTER TO SENATOR MARTIN.
