TO COOKE AND COOKE:

REFERENCE IS MADE TO YOUR LETTER OF MAY 16, 1955, RELATIVE TO THE INDEBTEDNESS TO THE UNITED STATES OF THE ESTATE OF JOHN W. WOODS, SERVICE NUMBER AF 4414 8381, IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,427.30.

YOUR LETTER INDICATES THAT THE DEBTOR'S ASSETS CONSIST OF FUNDS RECEIVED FROM THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION PLUS APPROXIMATELY $1,000 RECEIVED FROM OTHER SOURCES. WITH RESPECT TO THE LEGAL LIABILITY OF SUCH ASSETS TO SATISFY A JUDGMENT OBTAINED AGAINST THE DEBTOR, YOUR ATTENTION IS INVITED TO SECTION 3 OF THE ACT OF AUGUST 12, 1935, AS AMENDED, 38 U.S.C. 454A, WHICH EXEMPTS FUNDS RECEIVED FROM THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION FROM PAYMENT OF CERTAIN DEBTS. THIS OFFICE KNOWS OF NO STATUTORY EXEMPTION OF THAT CHARACTER WHICH WOULD BE APPLICABLE TO THE ASSETS NOT REPRESENTING PAYMENTS FROM THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION. THE GUARDIAN HAS SUGGESTED THAT PAYMENT OF $1,000 MIGHT BE TENDERED AS AN OFFER IN COMPROMISE, BUT NO AMOUNT HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM HIM. IF YOU OR THE DEBTOR'S GUARDIAN WILL PROMPTLY FORWARD TO OUR OFFICE A CERTIFIED CHECK OR MONEY ORDERS IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,000, DRAWN PAYABLE TO THE U.S. GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE, WE WILL UNDERTAKE, UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES CITED BY YOU, TO HAVE THE MATTER ADJUSTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE UNDER ITS COMPROMISE JURISDICTION. IN THE EVENT THE OFFER IS NOT ACCEPTED, THE REMITTANCE WILL BE RETURNED.

YOUR REPLY, INDICATING THE GUARDIAN'S INTENTIONS, SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE DEBT SECTION, CLAIMS DIVISION, GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE, 441 G STREET, N.W., WASHINGTON 25, D.C., REFERRING TO ..END :
