GOLDMAN: REFERENCE IS MADE TO YOUR LETTER OF SEPTEMBER 20. SINCE THE GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE IS WITHOUT AUTHORITY TO ACCEPT A COMPROMISE OFFER OF SETTLEMENT. REFERENCE IS MADE TO YOUR LETTER OF SEPTEMBER 20, 1955, ENCLOSING A CHECK COVERING YOUR OFFER TO PAY $150 IN FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT OF YOUR INDEBTEDNESS TO THE UNITED STATES, IN THE AMOUNT OF $341.31, PLUS INTEREST, ON ACCOUNT OF OVERPAYMENTS OF SUBSISTENCE ALLOWANCE BY THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION FOR THE PERIOD AUGUST 8, 1946, TO FEBRUARY 28, 1947.

SINCE THE GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE IS WITHOUT AUTHORITY TO ACCEPT A COMPROMISE OFFER OF SETTLEMENT, THE MATTER WAS REFERRED TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR CONSIDERATION UNDER HIS COMPROMISE JURISDICTION. IN REPLY, BY LETTER DATED JANUARY 19, 1956, THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ADVISED THAT THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE COMPROMISE OFFER OF SETTLEMENT OF $150 WAS NOT APPROVED. THAT DEPARTMENT DID, HOWEVER, AUTHORIZE OUR OFFICE TO ACCEPT AN OFFER IN COMPROMISE IN THE AMOUNT OF $250. ACCORDINGLY, IF YOU DESIRE TO SETTLE YOUR INDEBTEDNESS TO THE UNITED STATES UPON THAT BASIS YOUR CHECK FOR THE ADDITIONAL $100, MADE PAYABLE TO THE "U.S. GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE," SHOULD BE TRANSMITTED.

YOUR CHECK OR ANY CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING YOUR INDEBTEDNESS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE CLAIMS DIVISION, UNITED STATES GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE, POST OFFICE BOX 2610, WASHINGTON 13, D.C., REFERRING TO CLAIM NO.
