Comments on Department of Agriculture Announcement

GAO reviewed the Department of Agriculture's decision to allow the Commodity Credit Corporation to assume certain risks which were previously covered by commercial insurance carriers to determine if the policy went beyond the governmental policy of self-insurer. GAO found that the Government's practice of self-insurance is one of policy and not of law and that the policy did not go beyond the governmental policy of self-insurer.
