This is our report on a major rule promulgated by the Department of Agriculture. It was published in the Federal Register as an "interim final rule and request for comments" on January 12. The FSIS is declaring that SRMs are inedible and prohibiting their use for human food. Enclosed is our assessment of the FSIS's compliance with the procedural steps required by section 801(a)(1)(B)(i) through (iv) of title 5 with respect to the rule. If you have any questions about this report. The official responsible for GAO evaluation work relating to the subject matter of the rule is Robert Robinson. The preparation of a cost-benefit analysis was not possible. The economic effects of the interim final rule are currently being assessed.
