GAO commented on the propriety of certain actions a Department of Commerce deputy assistant secretary took in seeking private employment. It was determined that: (1) existing regulations did not prohibit the employee from seeking employment outside the government; and (2) although the employee acted in accordance with the legal advice he received from Commerce, his participation in a matter affecting foreign-owned-vehicle manufacturers violated Commerce's standards of conduct.
