This article discusses security software, one of the newer methods of automating computer system controls. It notes that security software must meet intended objectives in the areas of accountability, auditability, integrity, and usability. It describes the functional categories of security software, including: (1) operating systems security; (2) access control; (3) file encryption; (4) risk assessment; (5) telecommunications security; (6) microcomputer security; (7) network security; and (8) electronic data processing auditing. The article concludes that applications and systems software are crucial links to achieving secure systems.
