GAO recommended that Congress enact legislation relieving the spouse of a retired Air Force employee of liability for travel expenses the Air Force erroneously paid her to accompany her husband to an award ceremony. GAO noted that the employee's spouse incurred the travel expenses in good faith; however, since there was no legal basis for allowing her to retain the payment, the federal government would have to pursue collection action unless Congress enacted the legislation.
