Highlights

A former Air Force member requested reconsideration of the Claims Group's denial of his request for a waiver of indebtedness for overpayments he received in his housing allowance. GAO noted that, after his divorce, the member was eligible for housing allowances at the without-dependent rates, but he continued to draw the allowance at the higher with-dependent rates. GAO held that the member was at fault, since he should have: (1) known that a change in his marital status would result in a decrease in his housing allowance; and (2) brought the matter to the Air Force's attention. Accordingly, the Claims Group's decision was sustained.
