In response to a congressional request, GAO commented on an inquiry as to whether contracting personnel should purchase required items from commercial markets when the items differ from the items on the mandatory federal supply schedules. It was determined that an agency should request a waiver from the General Services Administration if the items available from the schedule will not meet its specific needs.
