This article, which appeared in the GAO Review, Vol. 21, Issue 3, Summer 1986, discusses the GAO role when U.S. citizens die abroad. GAO maintains a secured room containing the personal effects of some U.S. citizens who died outside the country and must dispose of estates after 6 years if no relatives claim the personal property or monetary assets.
