Highlights

An employee of the Defense Logistics Agency claimed additional travel costs incident to his transfer from outside the United States to a place near his residence prior to reporting to his new duty station. GAO was also asked whether the employee was entitled to transportation expenses for more than one trip from his new duty station to the vehicle port facility to which his automobile had been shipped. GAO held that an employee, who accepts a transfer of official station from outside the continental United States to one within the country, is entitled only to travel and transportation expenses to his new duty station and not to his place of residence. GAO also held that the employee was authorized transportation expenses for only one round trip to his vehicle port facility. Accordingly, there was no basis to allow the employee the cost of traveling to his residence or the cost of extra trips to retrieve his vehicle.
