The federal government, with over 16,000 major computer systems, is greatly affected by computer crime. This article, which appeared in the GAO Review, Vol. 19, Issue 3, Summer 1984, addresses the need for increased computer crime awareness through: (1) exploring the concept of computer crime; (2) discussing major problems GAO has found in federal information system security; (3) discussing possible future developments; and (4) presenting lawmakers' responses.
