Removing Barriers to the Market Penetration of Methanol Fuels

GAO discussed the use of methanol fuel as an alternative transportation fuel and described several methods to increase market growth. GAO noted that the Government could help reduce market uncertainty over usage requirements by developing appropriate emission standards. The Government could also establish an equivalency factor between methanol and gasoline to display methanol's fuel economy. GAO also noted that public or private sector fleet use of methanol could potentially lead to a wider market for methanol fuel and vehicles.
