The European Branch:
GAO in the Center of the Old World

This article, which appeared in the GAO Review, Vol. 17, Issue 4, Fall 1982, discusses the functions of the European Branch of the GAO International Division. The branch has spent equal amounts of time reviewing both defense and foreign affairs activities. It has performed studies of foreign government programs and prepared reviews of military preparedness and logistics in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization environment. In addition, it has reviewed military procurement, communications operations, support services for the military community, personnel management, economic assistance programs for developing countries, international trade and financial interests, international relations, and U.S. participation in international organizations, including international energy organizations.
