Highlights

An Air Force officer appealed the denial of his claim for reimbursement of the cost of transporting his household goods from Government quarters to private quarters in a town 240 miles distant where his wife had accepted employment. After the officer informed the housing office of his dependent's departure and his plans to vacate Government quarters, he was authorized local movement of his household goods at Government expense. The officer personally moved his household goods and indicated that his actions resulted in the Government's being saved the expense of moving him. In addition, since the officer expected to retire in the near future, he contended that his actions resulted in a cost saving to the Government when he retired. Joint Travel Regulations authorize reimbursement of moving expenses only when such moves are related to military operations and military needs, not to conditions of a personal nature. Since the officer vacated Government quarters as a result of personal considerations, he was not entitled to expenses for a long distance move. This was true even if the move might have provided a cost saving to the Government. Accordingly, the disallowance of the officer's claim was sustained.
