GAO responded to a letter from the Department of the Interior concerning the appointment of a former Comptroller General to a position within the Department. Interior was particularly concerned about the effect of such an appointment on the former Comptroller General's retirement annuity. Interior asked whether his annuity must be reduced by the amount of compensation he receives from them or whether he may receive compensation in addition to his annuity. GAO found that, based on Federal regulations, the former Comptroller General could receive compensation from Interior without any reduction in either his salary or his retirement annuity.
