Highlights

A civilian employee of the Department of the Air Force appealed the denial by the Claims Division of his claim for reimbursement for subsistence expenses incurred for meals he purchased on a privately-owned aircraft during official travel. The employee had been authorized reimbursement for all necessary travel expenses, and he was reimbursed at a per diem rate of $6 pursuant to regulations although he paid a substantially higher rate for meals. Applicable travel regulations permit officials to authorize or approve an increased per diem rate for en route travel outside the continental United States. If an administrative official wishes to take action to increase the per diem rate to cover the additional meal expenses, GAO has no objections to the higher rate being paid. Accordingly, the claim was remanded to the Air Force for its determination.
