Comments were requested on proposed legislation which would eliminate the requirement that construction contractors working on federal projects submit weekly statements to the federal government of the wages paid to each employee. Since this requirement results in a substantial amount of unnecessary administrative costs, GAO strongly supports the intent of the proposed amendment. GAO believes that the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs should consider: (1) revising the language of S. 3 to prohibit regulations requiring the submission of weekly payroll records; or (2) specifically stating in the Committee's report its intent to eliminate the requirement for the submission of weekly payroll records as well as the weekly compliance statement of wages paid.
